The Extended Essay

"The EE"

The extended essay is a required component of the International Baccalaureate® (IB) Diploma Programme (DP). It is an independent, self-directed piece of research, finishing with a 4,000-word paper.   the primary goal of the EE  is to develop practical preparation for undergraduate research.

International Academy of California is the only online tutoring service that employees a licensed international baccalaureate English examiner. This means that students will have the advantage of an extended essay curriculum designed by the very people that assess the extended essay for the international baccalaureate organization.

Students will learn how to formulate an appropriate thesis, engage in research and exploration of topics with depth and breath required at the university level. Communicating ideas in developing arguments as well as understanding counterpoints underpin the essential principles of   written communication of the University level.

*Because the extended essay is a core subject, students will not receive 4 practice exams but rather an individualized education plan suited to the "EE." Please contact us for more information.

Theory of Knowledge (TOK)

Theory of knowledge (TOK) is a course about critical thinking and inquiring into the process of knowing, rather than about learning a specific body of knowledge. It plays a special role in the DP by providing an opportunity for students to reflect on the nature of knowledge, to make connections between areas of knowledge and to become aware of their own perspectives and those of the various groups whose knowledge they share. It is a core element undertaken by all DP students, and schools are required to devote at least 100 hours of class time to the course. The overall aim of TOK is to encourage students to formulate answers to the question “how do you know?” in a variety of contexts, and to see the value of that question. This allows students to develop an enduring fascination with the richness of knowledge.

*Because theory of knowledge is a core subject, students will not receive 4 practice exams but rather an individualized education plan suited to the their needs for TOK.  Please contact us for more information

Academic English

English as an Additional Language support

Academic English is perhaps the most important aspect of a non-native English learners overall academic development. The application of subject specific vocabulary allows students to progress and communicate ideas in all subject areas. In order to score at  the levels required by premier universities throughout the United States, Canada, United Kingdom and beyond proper use of academic language and understanding its use in context both in written and oral communication will allow students to succeed not only in the diploma program but at University and beyond.

4 IB Diploma Program Practice Exams

Exams are simply what you are learning put into theoretical practice.  One can think of exams as a blueprint for the real world.  IB DP examinations are a testing of that blueprint.  Students may or may not look forward to exams but the fact is that IB DP subject examination scores are the key to getting into the university of your choice.

The difference between earning between 1 grade point in an exam (e.g. between a 5 or a 6) will depend on how prepared you are holistically for the exam.  The nature of the game plays out accordingly: the better the exam scores, the better the chances of getting into the university you want.

Here at the International Academy of California, we deliver a 4 practice exams for every course.  This way you will have the extra preparation needed to feel confident about the subject matter and the academic language needed for your IB DP examinations.

(TOK and the Extended Essay are treated differently by necessity.  Please contact us for details.)

Our Method

AdobeStock_99777536.jpeg

1 Student, 1 Teacher

Our tutoring sessions are one-on-one using live video streaming. The teacher  can see the student and the student can see the teacher.   The teacher may or may not use a classroom like setting depending on what the student and their subject requires. For example, many maths lessons would necessitate work on a whiteboard. However, an English A language and literature tutoring session may require looking at a student's paper, reading a passage from a book together, or any other learning activity that a teacher would do with a student in a classroom. All of our teachers are professionals, are certified, and have been teaching the international baccalaureate at international schools around the world.  The average number of teaching years for our staff is 12 years. Thus, our teachers use their best professional judgment when it comes to how the student will learn most effectively.

Individualized lesson plans or individualized education plans, are reserved for special situations in most countries. Classroom teachers have mixed feelings about them since they take so much time to create. However the only type of lesson this the student of the international academy of california will receive is individualized to suit their learning needs. We do not have a one-size-fits-all tutoring system like most other less serious programs.

Students will take an assessment or series of assessments at the beginning so that we know where the student is starting (just as they would at a proper international school). We will then analyze and evaluate the students strengths and weaknesses at the very beginning and continually throughout the course. This will inform the teachers in how they should proceed with each individual student since each student is special and has their own unique strengths and weaknesses.

We make it a fundamental principle to focus on what each student needs rather than relying on pre-programmed curriculum written for a general audience.  The IAC will deepen students' understanding, give them the extra test prep they need, but will deliver the program with an individualized and holistic approach to each student's unique form of learning style giving them the kind of tutoring education that will help them thrive.

Technology And Scale

Whether at home or on the go you can take your lessons on your desktop or laptop computer.  You can even access recorded lessons and materials on your phone as featured lessons and tutorials  are made available as downloadable content.

Even though our tech is cutting edge we still keep it personal.  Our teachers and students still see each other face to face just as we would in a "real" class.  Streaming is so powerful these days that this classroom set in the digital redwoods will feel less digital and more of your everyday each time you use it.

We are a 1 to 1 tutoring school.  The International Academy of California is accepting no more than 12 students for our spring semester '18 opening. We will select students based upon the likelihood of our team being able to help them with their stated goals for university entrance and sustained success.

Experience, Practice, Professionalism

Every teacher at IAC has between 8-22 years of experience as a classroom teacher as well as having taught one or more IB subjects.  The research, development, and experience that leads to our curriculum design and development spans careers.  Sometimes we get the question, what is your system? Our system is that we only hire credentialed teachers with IB subject experience,  the same type of teacher that is  likely teaching your  IB DP subject in your daily classroom right now.

Resources are an integral part of a high-quality holistic educational experience.  They are tough to collect and use effectively as so many resources lack certain fundamental aspects necessary for student engagement. Because we have so many years in the classroom, usually with a diverse class makeup full of students with different learning styles, each teacher has compiled hundreds if not thousands of documents and other media to support their class.  This portfolio is what makes IAC so unique.  These resources will be shared with the student, and only the student, at the beginning and then throughout the 12 week tutoring period.

WOrking with your Schedule

Many of our teachers are still classroom teachers and all of our students are still classroom students.  We can work with you to make a time fit.  If you want to do your classes only on the weekends or spread them through the week, we can probably work something out.  This is individualized learning with teachers and students working together to make it work.

Downloadable material such as lectures and board work will be available for students to watch at a time that is best for them. The combination of the ability to download resources as well as work with your teacher to create the most effective schedule for both of you allows the student the flexibility to be tutored when he or she is ready.

Our Tutors are Teachers

The International Academy of California is comprised of credentialed, classroom teachers, who have International Baccalaureate subject experience.   All of our teachers have worked internationally at schools from Shanghai to Buenos Aires to California.   All of our teachers have attained Bachelors and many have Master's degrees from universities in the United States, Canada, the UK and Ireland.  Our educators have held leaderships positions as heads departments and deputy heads of school.  Many of our teachers have also had success outside the classroom in business, law, science, technology, and many other areas.  Thus, our teachers not only bring years of stellar classroom experience but the real world application of that experience to our students for university preperation and life afterwards.

Credentialed

We are the only online IB DP tutoring website that employs 100% teachers who are credentialed by recognized and respected teaching programs in the United States, Canada, UK, and Ireland.  Many other sites require their teachers simply to have graduated from college or taught for one maybe two years.  That is not the IAC.  A tutor should know as much if not more than the classroom teacher.  Where can you find tutors like this?  Here at the International Academy of California.

IB Classroom Experience

Our teachers have a combined experience of over 80 years of teaching in classrooms everyday to children across the world.   The If you're coming from a another IB DP tutoring website ask the teacher who is tutoring your child how many years of classroom experience they have.     We are the ONLY tutoring website in the world that hires only classroom teachers IB DP experience.   If the first two categories didn't seperate us enough from the competition, this surely does.  This experience and professionalism is something you will not find anywhere where else in the world when it comes to online tutoring websites, especially those dedicated to the IB Diploma Program.

INDIVIDUALIZED Learning- The 1 on 1 Advantage

Everyone knows that it's a lot easier to learn when it's just you and the teacher.  So much more can get done in a 1 on 1 setting because the teacher is focused on the ability level of the singular student alone.  If a student is having trouble with concepts, the tutoring session can be focused on conceptual development.  If the student is struggling with writing and using the academic language of the subject then the tutor has time to work with that student and make great improvements in an area in just a few classes.  At the International Academy of California, our teachers know how to identify and fix the problems students are encountering and that is what we can do because we've been doing it as professionals for at least 8 years or more each.
